As the fashion industry strives to clean up its act, there is continuous updating and access to new sustainable technologies. At ALIYA WANEK, we are committed to continuing our education to bring you the most sustainably made executions of our designs. Please look at each product description to see garment specific sustainability notes. Goals for the immediate future include building a circular model and achieving zero waste from collection to collection. 

GLOSSARY OF TERMS


SUSTAINABILITY - A balance of society, economy, and environmental long-term resilience.


GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) - The highest standard that ensures the certified organic status of textiles -from the harvesting of the raw fiber to the environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing of the product.


OEKO-TEX - A standard that ensures the textile(s) have been tested for harmful substances and are safe from a human-ecological perspective.


ZERO WASTE - Sending no waste for disposal via landfill or burning.


CIRCULAR - Products that have reduced or completely no need for virgin resources and are designed with the end of their life in mind. The product is therefore more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly throughout its life. Examples of circular models include repairs during the garment's life, sending your item back at the end of its life to the producing company purchased from for a shopping credit so they can upcycle into a new item.


BIODEGRADABLE - Able to break down and blend back in with the earth, given the right conditions and presence of microorganisms, fungi or bacteria. Ideally, no toxins are left behind.


CARBON FOOTPRINTTotal emissions of greenhouse gases (in carbon equivalent) for an activity or organization over a given period of time.


FAIR TRADEAn alternative approach to conventional trade, based on a partnership between producers and consumers, to ensure that farmers and workers get a fair share of the benefits of trade.
